Time

I am interested in how we perceive time and how time changes our perception of the world. I want to be able to physically represent time in a way where you can see its development over time in one object.

I’ve tried through my work to record time on a three-dimensional level by observing and recording shadows cast from objects that usually produce light – such as candles and lamps. I’ve been able to make these shadows three-dimensional by giving a measurement of height to the shadows' duration of staying in one place, which has allowed me to build the shadows into 3-D shapes.

There are four pieces in total, each of which is around one metre high and half a metre wide. The formation of the shadows have given the objects an architectural feel, as the way it builds up in layers almost resembles stairs.

By keeping the pieces white I have allowed the shadows to come back into them to highlight each layer of time represented in each object.
