I am a Naarm/Melbourne-based artist who works within sculpture and spatial practice. My work involves an exploration of materials and objects to investigate themes of gender, the domestic and the feminine. My work focuses on materiality, form and balance. I draw inspiration from objects and themes associated with domestic settings, and my work poses a critique of traditional female roles within these settings. I am interested in the process of dismantling traditional gender roles and norms through making. As well as using traditional sculptural materials I engage with objects that hold utilitarian value and explore materiality through industrial building materials. My work often consists of textiles, cast objects, metal and ready-mades. Untitled Object Series is a work of material translation that explores issues surrounding older women’s homelessness. As an expansion of previous works critiquing traditional female gender roles in domestic settings, this work turns its focus outwards to explore the consequences and implications for women whose homes are taken away from them due to factors such as domestic abuse, illness, breakdown of a relationship or financial pressure due to prolonged time spent in caring roles. This series of objects aims to spark a conversation about the increasing percentage of older women experiencing homelessness. As the needs of this demographic are different to others who experience homelessness, women often do not interact with most available community services and find themselves struggling to find services tailored to their health and care requirements. This work serves to open a discourse surrounding the need for community services tailored to vulnerable women’s specific needs and the unseen and fast growing demographic of older unhoused women in Australia to be heard, seen and given voice.
