The Perpetual Opponent
The Perpetual Opponent is part of a new series of introspective works that document repetitive thought patterns and the state of rumination we slip into when trying to process problems that plague us.
The work consists of a pile of static table tennis balls representative of the failed attempts to solve problems, to ruminate over each idea with no solution, and how this becomes a burden on the mind. The game is familiar, the components worn, and detritus begins to accumulate in its surroundings. It resembles something that isn’t functional anymore; an archaeological site of redundant structures in the mind that can’t fulfil its dubious goal. The umpire's chair sits in judgment and offers a state of perspective among the chaos.
