Becoming more urban
The theme of my series of works is 'becoming more urban'. In this series, I aim to create the look of the tall buildings in Melbourne's CBD and explore the density of this city. The high-rise buildings in the heart of Melbourne have created a unique vertical and dense living space. Architectures were originally built to serve the needs of people, but more and more complexes of architectures seem to be turning the city into a jungle of buildings. When we look at these skyscrapers, we sometimes seem to be looking at strange and dense giants. Some buildings are too close together, as if they were overlapping on top of each other. Even the sky was cut and squeezed into irregular shapes by the buildings. Compared with many other cities, Melbourne's density seems to be acceptable. The data for inner-city Melbourne is 22,400 people per sq km. The figure for New York City is 38,242 people per sq km, and for Shanghai it is 77,726 people per sq km. But the undeniable fact is that the city has become more urban in the past decade, and the pace of urban construction seems to continue in the future. I hope to express the current situation of our city and what we have become through this series, and I hope that viewers can use this as an opportunity to start thinking about what our city could become.
