Neither here nor there
Neither here nor there is an ode to migration and my cultural identity as well as it’s evolution throughout my upbringing and now early adulthood. It is a reflection of my desire for reconnection in hope of better navigating my presence in a Western world whilst still paying homage to who, what and where I once was. Throughout the years my ethnic identity has been repressed, filed away and forgotten about, but from time-to-time certain people, relationships, environments and tokens serve as a reminder that it has not been completely lost. The Western world can often saturate and consume foreigners, despite their efforts otherwise. It suspends immigrants in a grey area between their homeland and their chosen home, creating an overall feeling of displacement and lack of belonging – no matter where they are. In an effort to consolidate and accept the evolved version of my cultural identity I am choosing to embrace living in the grey area. By shedding light on elements in my life, specifically the women who have paved my way, I am reminded that it will always be embedded in my personal fabric regardless of the time passed or the distance travelled.
