Bloom

Welcome to Bloom. A book about flowers – Native Flowers. The ones that thrive in the Australian landscape.

This book is a photographic study of botanical life in Australia. Featuring a collection of flowering natives, the work explores the relationship between plants and their tangible features while considering their aesthetic qualities through alternative imaging technologies. Each flower is scanned to reveal the smaller details that are often hidden to the naked eye. Allowing the flowers to be seen in this new light, their sculptural forms take on different vantages, ultimately highlighting native flora in a way that accentuates their natural complexity and ability to flourish, grow and thrive: To Bloom.

Like much of my practice, this project explores themes of nature and place and how the two intertwine. This book stemmed from my passion about flowers and how they are more than just a plant in the backyard. Growing up, I didn’t appreciate the value of native flora because they weren’t conventionally beautiful. As grew up I realised that this wasn’t the case, and that these flowers embodied more than just their physical appearance. Thus Bloom was born.
