Where Do We Go from Here?
Leaving the city before sunrise. Empty petrol stations at midnight. The cautious parking lot of rural motels. Arriving at a destination only to have it look different from what it did on paper. The storyline follows through a set of image stills which disassembles the cinematic universe these visuals typically live in. Where Do We Go from Here? plays on the construction of fictionalised places and the representations we use to romanticise our world. The construction of the scenes was through a self-taught process, yet the tools needed to compose it leaned entirely on my photographic skillset. I was able to use reflection and neon as tools to expand the sense of isolation in the scenes. Such volumetrics were more accurate to a real photograph as they added depth and a sense of realism. Where Do We Go from Here? enabled me to further explore what essential aspects make up a photograph without needing to pick up a camera. In thinking of composition from the ground up, the process deepened my understanding of image-making both with and beyond the lens.
