This series investigates a modern approach to the Australian Gothic genre, focusing not on the traditional natural landscapes of the past but on the newer, colder urban landscapes ever-present in the lives of Australia's youth. The series aims to show – through keeping the same style and atmosphere of the Australian Gothic works of the past – that the memories and mythologies of the past are still present in the new world of concrete and luminescent lights. The man in the photos is simply a product of his barren environment, and the landscape is seeing itself through his eyes: a habitat in introspect. It sees a cold environment of empty car lots and unnatural bus stops. The locations blend from one into the next, unsure and confused. Signs of forgotten nature linger in the darkness that so often envelops the subject, a reminder of what used to be shifted and exiled to the sides. The adolescent feels the memories of previous generations through the landscape, and the time spent finding an identity in a place that has none of its own. I have aimed to depict the generation of Australian youths found in the 80s and 90s when various cultures spawned from a time of self-inflicted and imposed pressure to gain a sense of outward maturity – a need to seem independent and adrift from the generations before them. Despite these attempts, the generational memories cling on in the background, and the fear of repetition clouds and distorts.
