The Passenger

I am an emerging photographer based in Naarm (Melbourne), Australia. My passions lie in documentary photography (particularly that of wildlife and music) and alternative processes. The Passenger is an ongoing loose visual narrative in which the personal relationship I have with public transport as an eternal passenger is explored. My father was declared legally blind and gave up his driver’s license around the time I began primary school. From then on, most travel was done on trains and buses. Growing up, it also became the way I established my independence. Using public transport I was able to escape my quiet regional Victorian town to the city. Public transport offers an opportunity to watch your surroundings change during a journey, whether it’s looking out the window to see different regions that the train-line runs through; the slow but consistent growth of towns and farmland that surround the line; or how the vehicles themselves change to adapt to a growing population. The Pakenham line, on which these images were shot, is consistent with this. I hope to continue to record these images in the future, so they reflect not only the differences in landscape between the start and end of a journey but also the progression of time. Aspects of a journey shared by many people everyday are illustrated with images that were shot with a handheld camera then aligned and edited together to create  looped gifs – imperfect, but human.
