Street Works

My photographic project Street Works focuses on depicting everyday routines and daily life on the streets of Melbourne’s CBD in the context of the novel coronavirus pandemic.

These works continue a long tradition of street observations, candid depictions and fleeting encounters with anonymous passers-by. This group of images aims to create significant visual documentation about our society’s current situation. The essential element in my approach is to record the social conditions that affect people’s lives, the atmosphere of uncertainty and their adaptation to the current situation. I intend to depict this scenario in the theatre of everyday life and reveal a narrative about contemporary humanity as defined by the Covid-19 pandemic. I approached this chaotic situation with an artistic perspective to demonstrate our society’s visual identity that changed dramatically during the Covid-19 pandemic. My work then continues to reflect Swiss photographer Beat Streuli's, in which he explores the individual in public places “in a fleeting moment of private life [and] in the intimacy of their thoughts.” Like Garry Winogrand, another significant influence on my work, I photograph prolifically and am constantly interested in transforming the real world into a distinct image.
