I use photography to play with the formal arrangements of shape, line, colour and pattern to create illusory and geometric compositions. Inspired by the form and aesthetic of urban architecture, I reorient these elements into flattened spatially-dense compositions to disorient perceptions of space and scale and concurrently to explore an imaginative response to an ever-expanding global cityscape. Using a combination of analogue and digital techniques such as multiple exposures, cropping, rotation and large-format printing, I search for ways to move beyond the surface of representation and engage the spectator in the spatial dynamics of the image itself. By testing the medium’s capacity for abstraction, my work seeks to extend the vocabulary of photographic representation and create new ways of seeing in the digital age.
