I am a Naarm/Melbourne-based artist about to graduate from a Bachelor of Fine Art at RMIT, majoring in ceramics. I use drawing and diaristic writing to inform my ceramic sculptural work. I take imagery drawn directly from my environment. In this way my work acts as a mirror reflecting my immediate subjective world. My graduate work is a duo of large figurative clay sculptures inspired by the Northern Melbourne suburb of Preston. After leaving regional Victoria for suburban Melbourne I have developed an intimate relationship with Preston, and have become intimately familiar with both its delights and its tedium. At the centre of this work is my desire to record a suburb I feel is rapidly changing, therefore I am recording a very personal and fleeting relationship. I approach this with a sense of humour and a dash of cynicism, however I also feel an affectionate warmth for Preston, viewing it as an old friend. By using text and inserting figures into my work I really wanted to stress the subjective nature of my engagement with this space and how deeply personal and complex my relationship is.
