My practice explores the material performance and interplay between metal, glass and clay. As a collector of discarded objects, I combine steel, glass and clay with botanicals and plant matter foraged whilst wandering through vacant lots, laneways and forgotten urban spaces in my suburb. Porcelain slip is used to encase thistles, weeds and flowers as a process of reclamation and regeneration. These ‘clay’ elements are layered and assembled on mass alongside the fusible materials of glass and steel then transformed through the ceramic process of high firing. A material metamorphosis results in highly ornamental sculptural vessels. With the inclusion of discarded and 'waste' objects and materials, my work aims to subvert notions of value and amplify the relationship between consumerist behaviours and the fragility of planetary ecosystems.
