As We Come Together

I am a ceramic artist based in Naarm/Melbourne. My work investigates my sense of place and belonging, particularly at a time that marks the end of lockdown. I use porcelain for the material qualities of the clay to make fine sculptural and functional works. In drawing inspiration from sentimental objects and meaningful relationships I aim to connect to the historical processes, techniques and uses of ceramics. Through these methods I convey a narrative that focuses on evoking and communicating a particular emotion aided by form, colour and composition.

‍As We Come Together explores my deep connection and longing for my immediate family during Melbourne’s long lockdown restrictions. Inspired by the bowls and cups I grew up using, I tell a story of the importance and joy of family gatherings and the shared use of dinnerware at evening meals. The recreation of this family dinnerware is symbolic and hopeful of my family coming back together around the table. The arrangement of blue and white toned cups and bowls references the intimate and shared history of functional ceramics. The colour blue is significant to me as it is evocative of my childhood dining table setting. By finely throwing blue and white toned clay into a variety of different sized vessels I am representing myself and my siblings who are all grounded by the same central figures in their lives yet are entirely independent and unique individuals.
