I am a sculptural artist, based in Naarm/Melbourne, who explores the unique material characteristics of porcelain clay. Working predominantly with porcelain slip and incorporating fabric into my process, I allow the fluid nature of my materials to guide the making process. I use ceramics as a medium for exploring how materials evolve and transform throughout different stages of making. Porcelain slip has particularly unique material characteristics that can be formed in ways that malleable clay cannot. This process allows me to push the limitations of thin-ness, transparency and fragility of my sculptures whilst the liquid nature of the porcelain slip allows for a seamless inclusion of textiles into this process. My current artwork is about the materiality of porcelain in its truest state, exposing the raw white surfaces of the clay body which are translucent and fragile. Highlighting the capabilities of porcelain’s strength, I push the textile and clay process to its finest point. The resulting sculptures cyclically exchange between fluid and rigid states throughout the making process. This relationship symbolically reflects the psychological journey of creativity, often being an emotional ebb and flow between visualisation, intuitive creation, external influence and tangible results.
I would like to respectfully acknowledge the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation who are the traditional Custodians of the land in which I live, learn and create. I pay respect to their Ancestors and Elders, past and present.
