For the past 23 years RMIT’s School of Art has partnered with the Hong Kong Art Centre and its education division, the Hong Kong Art School, to deliver RMIT programs in Hong Kong. The 2021 graduating cohort from the Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) program in Hong Kong were fortunate to be able to hold an in-person graduate exhibition, Culturing, in July 2021 at Pao Galleries at the Hong Kong Art Centre. The exhibition is ordinarily held in July each year so that RMIT staff can participate in the celebration while they are in Hong Kong to deliver the face-to-face Intensive Seminars that are held at the beginning of each semester, but due to travel restrictions RMIT staff instead joined the festivities online. While we have been physically apart for almost two years now, technology has kept us close together. We look forward to deepening this special relationship face-to-face when international travel resumes in the coming months. This year 35 students studying across painting, ceramics, photography and sculpture specialisations shared their work with their extended communities across Melbourne and Hong Kong and beyond in the 2021 graduate exhibition. The artworks on display were the culmination of three years of intense hard work and dedication in collaboration with RMIT and Hong Kong Art School staff, peers, family and friends who have contributed conceptually, materially and socially to these final outcomes. This range of influences has been absorbed and distilled into the poetic, experiential and thought-provoking works that make up this exhibition.
