Window into Womanhood

Hello, my name is Sonia. My art practice explores my identity as a woman in society through techniques of digital collage and screenprint. My work focuses on what is important to me in terms of dealing with current issues. This year, in consideration of news around harassment towards women in Australian parliament and around the world, my work aims to offer insight into the inequalities women face throughout life. Through this, I have exposed the confronting and overwhelming emotions that we carry when dealing with these inequalities. It is important for me to create an opportunity for discourse around why feminism is still important and valid.

In my current project, Window into Womanhood, I have chosen to represent the idea of women’s issues building up below the surface, focusing on three specific points within this collage exploration: how people perceive women’s emotions; how a woman’s appearance is overanalysed; and how women are victim shamed. By creating a layered installation on acrylic sheets, I want to create a representation of a window into the crowded and overwhelming memories that many women live with. Each layer represents one of the above three issues and utilises a predominant colour scheme to differentiate and create symbolic meaning.
