My artistic interests have increasingly homed in on depictions of masculinity and how they contrast with notions of – and widespread fascination with – femininity within art. I hope to create a space for dialogue through humour and play that subverts notions of masculinity as something necessarily ‘strong,’ ‘dignified,’ ‘aggressive’ and ‘noble’ in the traditional senses of these words. The humorous aspect of my practice is perhaps the most important; the use of mockery and childlike imagery creates an atmosphere for lightness within conversations about masculinity, male sexuality and the rare objectification of the male form. Through the mediums of print and paint I investigate symbols and notions of sex and gender, and their relevance to this day, alongside paradigms such as self-destructive tendencies within masculinity, rituals of manhood and their meaning.
