No Place Like Home
My name is Kate; I am a print-based multidisciplinary artist based in Naarm/ Melbourne. My work is often focused on themes of identity, reflecting on myself as a woman within society, my experiences and outlooks during the good and bad times.
My practice shifts between digital and analogue, focusing mainly on digital print and screen printing. My themes often look at what is relevant to both myself and society at the time. I focus on the current happenings within the world and my community as an influence on my work. By focusing on the present, I can represent my themes and experiences in the most natural light. I often draw from the past to better represent the present, sometimes through alternative mediums, past experiences, and other times through comparative historical happenings. Identity is a common focus of mine. I am always creating through the female lens, even when not directly focusing on feminism.
My recent work, No Place Like Home, focuses on my life throughout the COVID-19 lockdown and my exploration to feel more connected with home. I have used an early 2000s digital camera to capture photographs and videos, creating a collection of candid moments I observed. Using an early 2000s camera makes for a nostalgic aesthetic, similar to what is found in old photo albums and home videos. This process has allowed me to find what home means to me. I discovered that home is not restricted to the walls of a house but to the people and places you surround yourself with.
