“Dissociative disorders create a disruption in consciousness, identity and perception of the world.” (Appendix 1, APH, 2021)

Everybody's experiences with dissociative symptoms are different. For me they are often visual and distort my reality, or they are memory related. My work draws from the influences of artists such as Wassily Kandinsky and Yayoi Kusama who used abstraction to convey their experiences of the mind and perception. My goal is to present an example of an alternative reality, as someone who lives with severe mental health issues. In this installation I’m focusing on the visual aspect of dissociation; using digital editing and painting techniques. I interviewed people anonymously to give me an understanding of their experiences with dissociation. I then created artworks in response to those statements.
