A Flash of the forgotten
My name is Emily and my art practice explores themes of identity as a woman, a sense of place and individual experiences. I use a mixture of traditional printmaking techniques and digital media including lino-carving and digital collage to emphasise those concepts.
A Flash of the forgotten is my graduation project that explores the relationship between home, nostalgia and by letting go of a sense of place you can begin to develop your future identity. By creating this project, I aimed to explore how being in lockdown in 2020 and 2021 resulted in my longing for home and that connection to childhood memories and holding on to something familiar in those chaotic times. In those lockdowns, I was away from my family home and had no access to the support that it brought me when I was alone or the reliance I had on family presence, as well as that nostalgic home, and how much ease it gave me to be there. Therefore, by letting go and embracing those nostalgic values I hold towards home, I can move on and develop myself by creating a new home for this permanent absence within my life.
By creating and installing this book, I wanted to create these lino prints – from detailed to simple – to develop the layers of nostalgia and to move forward in life.
