Over the past three years I've dabbled in multiple mediums, growing the fondest of watercolour in all its forms. Through portraiture, I've explored themes of feminism, folklore and trauma, all the while adding elements of whimsy and nostalgia that serve as a layer of bubble wrap between myself, the viewer and the dark themes that often reside in my work. For those who wish to look closely, there is often more than what first meets the eye. For me, creating art is either simplistic beauty or a reflection of my inner demons. I'm an escapist at heart, though I can't always run from my past so I turn around and face it with a brush or a camera. I often used antlers and the colours of the suffragette sash as symbols in my work. Men Will Be Men (2019) is my expression of what it's like to experience sexual abuse and domestic violence as well as the adulation of masculine power that is responsible for these egregiously widespread issues (domestic violence affecting several hundred million women globally, and sexual abuse affecting 1 in 3 women). How Do You Like Me Now? (2020) is a response to everything that's wrong with patriarchy and the doe-ification of femininity. Being very feminine myself, I'm often viewed as weak in the eyes of men, which had led to traumatic events that kept me living in fear. I wanted to flip the narrative and defy the stereotype, looking those who've abused me in the eye.
