My practice is driven by an investigation of the boundary of the self and how processes of merging, identification and displacement can be represented through the process of painting. Through drawing connections between inanimate objects and portraits of both myself and others I aim to create a body of work that encompasses an understanding of, and sensitivity towards, myself. Through close observation I animate everyday mundane objects and bring new life to the faces of unknown people or my own in order to revitalise the ordinary. The visual language of mark-making builds a commonality and subtle sense of unity between painting and drawing; portrait and object; self and other. I am fascinated by the long history of self-portraiture. I aim to both participate in, and challenge, the boundaries of this historic artistic practice to provoke new interpretations and explore unexpected representations of the self.
