The focus of this body of work is to employ a haptic and spontaneous methodology in the studio to generate new forms that emerge at the intersection of the figurative, the ethereal, chance and the unconscious. Throughout the process I have set certain temporal rules of production around the pace and duration of my working time to bypass intention and visualisation and allow gestural and material processes to generate imagery that moves both towards and then away from a conventional figurative image. I am interested in a process (or un-process) that allows the emergence of unconscious states working hand in hand with chance interactions of painterly material, to suggest new possibilities that can't be accessed through taking intentional steps. Through this dynamic process of formation and destruction of the figurative image I hope to incorporate affective and kinetic states of mind and body along with psychological and narrative elements that emerge and recede in the work.
