The Automatic Gesture
I was born in Lithgow, Australia, in 1981 and have always shown an interest in painting and drawing. While making this body of work, The Automatic Gesture, I found that abstraction can represent anything – the flow of dimensions produced by the free application of paint and colour allows the automatic gesture to become the content. Combining motion with quiet stillness and rapid contrasting tones tends to defy reason, instead delighting in the development of spontaneous forms that compose the image as a whole entity. Sometimes it seems like these works make themselves from the rapid motion of their processes. The act of making these abstractions is thrilling for me – the anticipation of dried colour and evolving shapes is exciting to witness.
