Stranded cotton embroidery on linen
A reworking in tapestry of Artemisia Gentileschi's 1612 painting, Judith Slaying Holofernes
Painted after her rape by her tutor in perspective drawing, Agostino Tassi
I made this work for all the women who were given a needle and thread instead of a brush and paint
For all the women whose artistic talent and potential was stifled
I made it to recognise the needle and thread as a fine art medium
For the recognition of many women throughout art history who broke through these walls and did great things as artists
And to all the women now and to come who will continue to work stitch by stitch towards the goal of equal recognition and success
As women
And as artists.
