My works aim to co-mingle the digital and analogue through machine learning and artificial intelligence, critiquing the relevance and cultural significance of painting in a world driven by a proliferation of digital visual culture.
Innovations in digital technology have revolutionised and disrupted analogue art in previously unimagined ways. Artists are consciously and unconsciously producing outcomes that embrace digital and machine aesthetics, pushing both abstract and representational languages in fascinating new directions. My works are initiated through feeding a curated data set drawn from my figurative paintings as well as arbitrary photographic images into an algorithm driven by artificial intelligence. Based on the input data I provide, and through a recursive iteration, the output is a vast collection of AI generated images and collages that resemble surreal and mechanised versions of reality. The collection is then used as a visual baseline to return to analogue forms through the act of painting.
The resulting works reflect my fascination in trans-humanism and post-human ideologies evident in the way technology can disrupt and enhance our physiological and sensory structures. My works explore the impacts of scientific and technological advancements on the human condition; the augmentation of our physical bodies a metaphor for the alteration of sensory reception and emotional and cognitive capacities. The biomorphic figures and fragments in my paintings live in a liminal non-space, with no particular time or place. The natural world, the synthetic and the human all converge to form an alternative future in which scientific progression ultimately blends all ecosystems together into a singularity.
