My work uses the theme of ekphrasis – the act of poetically describing an artwork – to convey ideas on how we respond to a visual form of art. A painted work may speak to us through its gestural shapes and figures, and with its embedded ideas and emotions. However we are rarely given the chance to respond to a work on a personal level. I use ekphrasis to invite the viewer to interact with my paintings by writing their own ekphratic responses to the work, creating a discourse between the paintings and viewer.
With a background in and a love for film, having a narrative in my work comes naturally to me. Although now I wish to detach my personal description of my work to allow others to attach their own meanings. With every response the narrative can change as each individual will have their own understanding, allowing my paintings' portrayals to constantly transform when viewed.
My painting method is fast and loose, only giving details where needed and letting the brush work show. Using a figurative style in the human form it is able to express various and understandable emotions through body language.
Cool light filling the space
Moving between delicate folds
Like gentle waves washing over you
Floating in the void
You are not lost
This is where you are meant to be
Your emotions echoing around you
Waiting for a response
