My mother is 101. She lives in two worlds. Awake in the dark she travels back over a century to Zarki, a small town in Poland where she was born. She relives her life as a child and as the young woman she became until the Holocaust took it all away. By day she brings that long ago time into the light. Her memories, only recently unearthed, are a gift she offers my sister and I over lunch-time conversations. These are her stories. Stories previously buried deep in her heart that have surfaced only in recent years and are scattered with humour and sorrow, love and home-grown philosophy. Recollections arise of Blind Mala who, unsighted, recognised every footstep. Mad Moishe Bom the water carrier appears, and also her father the town miller who died of a simple wound for want of antibiotics. This is a love story for my mother who loved and lost everything she cared for and who has become the revered Matriarch, much loved by a multigenerational family.
