As an artist I am conflicted between my desire to create new things and my responsibility to live consciously. Over the past two years my practice has evolved as a result of the restrictions in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This restriction coupled with my conflicting notions worked together to inform an adapted art practice. My current practice focuses on observing existing materials, and through this observation revealing unseen potential qualities. As an artist I believe it is my responsibility to offer new perspectives and participate in important conversations around change.

Made of recycled aluminium and plastic, What are you Whereing? How do you Wear it? is a beaded body adornment which acknowledges the environment it was made in. Commenting on the current climate crisis, the piece has a particular focus on the consequences we now face in the year 2021 as a result of our consumer culture.

Influenced by Donna Haraway’s book, Staying with the Trouble (2016), this piece observes the vast amount of material resources already in existence. Living in a world focused on the future,
WAYW? HDYWI? asks us to pause, reflect and use what we have already at our disposal.

Manufactured using repetitive methods, each bead is individually cut, pierced and thread in a labour-intensive process. Allowing deep contemplation, WAYW? HDYWI? is a performative process, allowing me to re-evaluate the materials which I often take for granted.

What are you Whereing? How do you Wear it? invites the viewer to contemplate their own actions, continuing the conversation around responsibility and wearing the burden.
