Weft
My practice explores themes of personal identity, feminism and relationships through the use of metalsmithing and fibre arts. The binary mediums and techniques represent differing attributes: metalsmithing is affiliated with strength, protection and masculinity; whilst textiles have long been affiliated with the feminine, delicate and the personal. By using these two elements in conjunction my works aim to represent the binary elements of my identity – including the dichotomy between the public and private elements of my person.
This finished body of work Weft (2021) is a dedication to my personal identity in all its forms. Physical, spiritual and historical. When taking into consideration myself as Elsie I must consider not only my heritage and the women that have walked before me, but also how my soul and physical presence on earth are all interconnected like the fibres in fabric.
This multi-medium tapestry Weft takes inspiration from the traditional making techniques of women throughout history and is reworked with an amalgamation of man-made and natural materials to tell the story of me.
