I am interested in the interconnection of things, in the spaces between, of liminality – especially where it blurs the edges of human and other-than-human-beings. In a time of huge ecological precarity I am fascinated at how separate we as a species see ourselves from the larger ecological networks that make up the fundamental functioning of this planet. The works I make aim to bring into the light these connections and highlight the intrinsic nature of their existence (something that has been purposefully eclipsed to aid the function of our late-capitalist neoliberal culture). I aim to make works that get to the spiritual essence of things, using the iconographic and symbolic to draw my work into being. I work from a rich network of meaning that is personal to myself and my experience as well as through archetypal images and collective imaginings. Further to this, I have been investigating ways in which I can make manifest not only relationships between 'human' and 'other' in the symbols of my work but also the particular human as the viewer, with the broader themes of otherness and connection made manifest in the materiality of my work. That is to say, how can the viewer see themselves as part of the work, part of the network, part of the 'spiders web'? I want to make work that disrupts the viewing experience of unattached voyeur and instead create spaces 'in-place' and 'in-body', where the viewer becomes part of the relationship that I am trying to highlight.
