My Dead Letter Men
Belinda is currently based in Melbourne, Australia. A visual artist working in photography and aerosol art, my work is concerned with loss, loneliness, impermanence, memory and the subconscious – and in all of this, the human condition. I have recently become interested in speaking out about my own experiences in a context of the wider community.
In photography my work is borne out of personal loss, loneliness, an endless search for meaning and the struggle to matter. In this is found it’s universality. Yet also observing injustice and prejudice in the wider societal context, I will always gravitate to this.
My Master of Photography final project, titled My Dead Letter Men, is a series of direct (yet imagined) communication in the form of letters written to (primarily) dead artists to construct a space for telling the stories of a female addressing the gender and power imbalance in creative industries. It explores how toxic behaviour and abuse in the workplace (and wider society) is tolerated all the way from lack of credit through to criminal behaviour. The visual components and my 35 years working in creative sectors and different mediums help tie me to the artists.
My aim is to open up a dialogue using humour, critique, appropriation and mixed media through contemporary art practice about why bad, even criminal, behaviour by males is tolerated, hushed up or not dealt with appropriately both at the community/organisation level and the justice system.
